The word “Sgraffito” comes from potters who glaze and then scratch back to previous layers. I use it in conjunction with cold wax and oil paint, then scratch back to get lines and colours and texture to capture a sense of history and use. Functional, old, wooden fishing boats have a character and patina that is unique to them as a group as well as individually. …sort of a finger print marking the DNA of their lives..
